JustRead Publicity Tours, for whom I usually review Christian historical fiction, needed reviewers for this book and so I agreed to accept an electronic copy for that purpose. I’m also cross-posting this to my Proverbial Reads fiction review blog as that’s where I usually post my reviews for JustRead.

My Take:

The concept of a man being visited by spirits at night and taken on a journey of redemption is nothing new. There have been many variants of A Christmas Carol since it was first released in 1843. Here, now, is another with lead character Lester Sharp being almost as frugal as Ebenezer Scrooge. Fate of the Watchman doesn’t take place on Christmas Eve, but the clock still strikes midnight… and stops.

How much of our community do we really see or notice? How often do we turn a blind eye to the bad things that happen? Or do we shrug them off, saying these things are nothing to do with us? Ask yourself these questions while reading. Draven takes Lester on a supernatural tour that starts in his home town and finishes on a middle-eastern battlefield. Lester witnesses the worst of human behavior, including violence and murder, but is powerless to stop any of it. Are we equally as powerless, or is there one thing that we can all do as the narrative suggests?

For such a short book, Fate of the Watchman packs a hefty emotional punch. It’s a powerful reminder of the power of prayer which is something, I admit, I’m not great at. There’s also a bit of a cliffhanger at the end: what’s next for Lester and Draven?
